Geotechnical Investigations
& Design

RB Geotechnical can provide Phase I Desk Studies and Phase II Intrusive Investigations to focus on the geotechnical elements of a site.

The Phase I Desk Study collates a range of information, from various sources, providing the site's geological, hydrogeological, and environmental information, along with historical information about both the site itself and the surrounding area.  This data is used to then establish any geotechnical risks that could arise on the site, along with providing preliminary recommendations as to what foundations may be required.

RB Geotechnical can provide detailed Geotechnical Phase II Intrusive Investigations, to help assess the underlying soils in terms of their strength capabilities (shear strength and allowable bearing pressures) and their potential for ground movement (soil settlement).

Additionally, we can investigate existing foundations on a building in order to help establish a suitable foundation solution for any proposed new extensions onto that building.

The Geotechnical Phase II Intrusive Investigation involves physically testing the soil and collecting soil and/or rock samples for geotechnical laboratory testing, in addition to carrying out in-situ (on-site) testing of the soil to establish the soils strength with depth.  The soil laboratory testing then allows for an assessment of the soil in terms of it’s shrinkability, it’s shear strength and it’s potential for settlement issues.

There are a range of techniques that can be used for Geotechnical Phase II Intrusive Investigations, all of which are dependent on the actual requirements and needs of the investigation that is to be carried out. These techniques include hand-excavated trial pitting, machine-excavated trial pitting, windowless sample boreholes, cable percussion boreholes, and rotary open-hole boreholes. All site works are supervised by a qualified engineer representing RB Geotechnical.

We will then use all of this gained information to compile a Phase II Geotechnical Interpretative Report, which will summarise the findings of the Intrusive works and give conclusions and recommendations as to what (if anything), needs to be done next. This will include an assessment of potential foundation options, allowable bearing pressures, and possible settlement issues.

We are also able to provide a detailed design of any new foundations.
